Heart Righteousness

Heart righteousness goes deeper than outward acts - anger is murder, lust is adultery, in the heart.

“You have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not commit murder' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent. “You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery'; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. - Angry with your brother - guilty before the court even if you smiled outwardly.
- Level 1: God cares about anger and lust in your heart - not just whether you looked polite on the outside.
- Level 2: You can look fine outside while anger or lust inside still breaks the rule - like a clean shirt hiding a messy room.
- Level 3: Outward compliance without inward righteousness fails the standard - heart murder and heart adultery count before God, not just visible acts.
- Level 4: Treat anger and lust in the heart as guilt before God - polish on the outside does not erase it.
- Level 5: The Beatitudes and Judge Not both assume heart-level righteousness - external niceness is not the finish line.
- Lust logged mentally - adultery in the heart though marriage looks fine outside.
- “You have heard… but I say” moves righteousness from courtroom compliance to motive and imagination.
- Under Free Grace, this is not a new merit ladder it is the standard the Spirit applies to a life already saved, starting where only God sees.
- Fruits of the Spirit names what that inner work produces outward - love, gentleness, self-control, and the rest.

- I smiled through the bad call and nursed the anger the whole ride home - heart righteousness is polite outside, poison inside; God cares about the inner life.
- I sent a cold reply that sounded professional while resentment ran inside - Jesus moves righteousness from courtroom compliance to motive.
